FENCE – The Experiment
This is a novel that, while necessary in the process of finding my voice and bettering my writing, probably didn’t need to be publicly available. My dad will fight me on this to the end of time. He claims this is the best book I’ve ever written to this day. It is memorable because it’s the first thing I put out on the internet, but goodness, could I have benefited from Grammarly.
I wrote this book when I was 12 and 13 years old and published it when I was 14 (one day before my 15th birthday). It is…an interesting concept, I will give it that much. The execution is subpar, that I can admit. But, for a 12-year-old, it’s not half bad. The writing and premise are clearly HEAVILY influenced by the dystopian books of the era (*cough* Hunger Games *cough* Divergent). To me, it feels more like fan-fiction that should have never seen the light of day, but I digress. I would love the opportunity to revisit this novel and give it structure and some distinguishing factors from other sci-fi books.
If you can’t tell by now, I disagree with my father about this being my best work, and this is a regular conversation in the house. It is not that I don’t love FENCE, I do, I just feel it would benefit from some TLC, and perhaps editing.
I forget who said it, or if this is even accurate, but you have to be willing to write a million bad things to get to the good ones. I was willing, bless my heart. For the sake of my inner child, and my family, I have left this book on the internet. So, if you ever find yourself bored and in need of some proof that you can improve as a writer, give it a glance and know you made 12-year-old me so excited that my work was being read.
