IH

IH is a series idea that took me by surprise.

Before this idea, I generally only thought of novels in the shape of trilogies or duologies, never anything more. But with the rise of Game of Thrones and more adult epic fantasies that I began to read, I began to think beyond three books.

I was 21 years old when I began writing this series. My relationship with writing changed from teenhood to adulthood. I became a passionate outliner. I learned how to structure scenes. I learned how movement, color, and other small details can play into symbolism and meaning. Not only could I keep my word count under 100K, but I also didn’t have to gut the entire story three times over to get it right.

IH spawned out of the backstory of a different novel, DOMAC. As I was outlining DOMAC, I found myself asking how this world came to be, what it’s history was, and who shaped that history. These questions led me to the plot of IH, which then took on a life of its own.

As I outlined this sprawling idea, the world, politics, and conflict grew in scale. I find IH interesting because it is so distinct from Hale and my other works. It’s grittier, darker. It doesn’t pull its punches. The heroine is less a traditional hero and more someone on a righteous warpath. I can’t wait to continue writing this series and explore the nuances of the world set up in IH.
